Autumn and Winter calling…

Standard

Hi Folks. Here we are in September after what can only be described as a pretty damp summer.

We had another wonderfully peaceful Meditation retreat in June. Big thanks to everyone who came and to Dene Donaldson for his guidance.

Looking ahead we have our Bee Aware event at Carmichael. See the lovely poster below. This is FREE too so no excuse not to pay us a visit. Lots to see and do.

Bee Aware jpg

In October we will see the return of the amazing UK Playshop. This year over 60 people will join us for an extended drum circle facilitation training program at Wiston Lodge from 16 different countries. How amazing is that?

As always we will complete our training with a fantastic FREE community family friendly drum circle as part of the Biggar Little Festival.

This will be followed by the inaugural TTT (Train The Trainer) program. Our very own Paul John Dear will be one of the 12 global trainers stepping into the shoes, coat and hat of Arthur Hull, to continue his inspiring work of building community through rhythm.

We are already looking ahead to 2018. There will be more meditation retreats, more drum circle facilitation and the return of Music Medicine Training with the fabulous Christine Stevens too!!

In and among we hope to offer smaller events focusing on local musical talent, ecology ( specially our friends the Bees) and who knows…a surprise or two no doubt.

Keep posted with all we are up to by Subscribing to our mailing list.

See you at an event soon.

Turning Towards: a mindfulness retreat

Standard

You are warmly invited to join us at our summer retreat from June 8th to June 11th 2017, guided by Dharmacharya Dene Donalds in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh. We will gather as a Sangha of all ages to support our practice of Mindfulness. Together we will be seeking positive ways of living in these times of political uncertainty, upheaval, and climate change.

How can we make a difference to our lives in the world we are living in, in the here and the now? Together we can create a living community of inter-being finding ways to live together with compassion and insight. To explore how we can contribute to a sustainable and peaceful world.

We can make a difference to ourselves, our lives, and the world we live in.

We will practice together to:-

Find peace and energy within ourselves
Learn to listen deeply
Practice guided, working and walking meditations
Touch the earth,
Learn how to form Sanghas and communities of resistance

Wiston Lodge with its extensive grounds and natural environment, merging upwards to Tinto Hill, gives us the opportunity to deepen our awareness of Interbeing with Nature and with one another. The doors are wide open for all our friends and we hope that everyone young and old will feel nourished and enriched through the explorations of the practice.

Claudio will also perform his amazing solo set for the Sat evening concert.

In this solo show Claudio will be performing songs from his upcoming album plus some lovely sounds from his native Brazil. Witness the power of African culture in Brazilian traditions and expect a guest or two to join him on stage.

Dr Jane Bentley

Jane B

Originally trained in theatre, Jane Bentley spent six years touring the world with the International Purves Puppets. This involved being mostly invisible in such prestigious destinations as Syria, Taiwan, and Auchtermuchty village hall. Having discovered the Community Drum Circle movement in the USA, she headed off to Hawaii to train with it’s foremost exponent, Arthur Hull. She continued her studies by completing her PhD based on drum circles and improvisation, highlighting the effects of group music making on human wellbeing – the first time that the practice of drum circle facilitation has been studied at this level. Further training has included improvisation with the Grammy award winning cellist David Darling and his Music for People organisation, vocal improvisation with Bobby McFerrin, and two Eurpoean Union Leonardo Da Vinci ‘Transfer of Innovation’ projects on music in health settings with the Royal Northern College of Music and Musique et Sante, Paris.

Jane will be facilitating voice workshops and will no doubt spring a ukelele upon us at some point during the weekend 😉

Paul John Dear.

www.archibaldphotography.co_.uk_1079

Paul is a teacher and facilitator of rhythmical connection. His studies have taken him across the globe and he has been privileged to work with drummers and musicians from Guinea, Morocco, Senegal, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Brazil and Ireland as well as many based here in the UK.

He is also a VMC (Village Music Circles) certified Drum Circle Facilitator and has worked alongside it’s founder Arthur Hull since 1999 providing training programs for Global audience.

Paul will host rhythmical Alchemy sessions. He may explore some culturally specific patterns and structures with you or delve into platformed improvisational play. Whatever road he takes, and he usually doesn’t know what that is until you show up, you will be treated to a session full of playfulness, humour and connection. You’ll leave with a smile on your face and deep rhythmical connection in your heart. All drums and percussion are provided but feel free to bring your favourite.

SATURDAY EVENING CONCERT

On Saturday night we will be treated to performances from Claudio (see above), Simon Wood and Tamara and as always a few surprise appearances from within the Wiston musical stable. The night will end with either an open jam or dj’s or both!!!

A fantastic night awaits you.

Simon Wood and Tamara

13320487_10154834759364908_1315426690547217740_o1

The evocative sounds of the Hang meet the ethereal and goose bump inducing voice of Tamara who sings like an angel and plays the fiddle like a demon. Simon looks like a demon and well, plays the hang quite angelically at times.
Expect slow and atmospheric music at the start with Arabic , Indian , African, Celtic and electronic influences building up to a crescendo of hypnotic trancey driving beats, hands in the air – lets hug a tree mayhem.

Mometo and friends: Ceremonial rhythms and songs from the African shamanic tradition of Gabon

ben3

Mometo (aka Ben Taylor) first went to Gabon in 2007 and has since returned three times to receive initiations and healings in the tradition called Bwiti. The music, whose polyrhythms are designed to engender altered mind states, is a vital, and very specific part of the ceremonies and he has been learning it since 2010. There are two main instruments used: the Ngombi, an eight stringed harp, and the Mungongo, a large, one stringed mouthbow. These instruments, along with rhythm sticks, rattles, drums and a chorus of singers, provide the hypnotic music that propels the all-night ceremonies. Mometo will be accompanied by his wife Kate who has also visited Gabon and encountered this music in the jungle where it originated.

Solo Performance from Claudio Kron Do Brazil

claudio-46“As always I introduce myself as a Brazilian percussionist! I am passionate about percussion and I love to work with a whole range of percussion instruments. The stage has become my second home, a place where I feel very comfortable performing the story of my life in terms of sounds, colours and vibrancy!”
